My friend Patt Nicol organizes an art show every year at the Magic Castle in Hollywod, and I'll be a part of it again (I was there at the inaugural show 3 years ago). It's happening on Friday, June 6th, 2008, from 7pm to 10:30pm. The admission is $25 per person, plus a $6 valet parking fee. This entitles you to the art exhibit/reception and any of the magic shows, except for the main show in the Palace of Mystery, which is reserved only for those who choose to have dinner there. Attendees must be 21 and over, and there is a strictly enforced dress code (refer to the Magic Castle website for details). You need an invitation to get in, which you can request from me. I have a limited number of them, so email me asap if you'd like some :)
Went up to Santa Monica this morning to hang the latest show. Had to
meet at 8:30 am! Yikes, nothing like having to get up early on a
Saturday... But the show looks really good and I'm thrilled that I'm
showing at Bergamot Station, which is a pretty prestigious gallery
complex in LA. Well, even if I'm in the cafe, I figure I'll probably
get more foot traffic!
I just finished watching Kanon--it's a super-cute series and I really
fell in love with it. It's a gentler, kinder kind of harem series, I
suppose.
I didn't
really like the art style at first (I don't like super-duper huge eyes), but the quality of the animation is
such I got over it quickly. Have there ever been snowfalls as beautiful
before? Plus, the actor who does the main guy's voice is the same one
that does Kyon on Haruhi Suzumiya, and I really love his voice, for
some reason--must be that wry, sardonic quality. I thought it was going
to be just another high school-type series when I started watching it,
but there are some supernatural elements and surprisingly moving
emotional drama. What can I say, I loved it.

And his bevy of beauties who all love him, of course. But it's not a creepy harem series--it's really sweet!
So while I've had a facebook account for a few months, I didn't start seriously working on it til this past week. The whole reason I joined in the first place was so I could play scrabulous. I love scrabble and have been looking for a good online community version for a while, and this really fits the bill. Right now i have two games going on, one with a friend and one w/a random person. It's one of those take 2 weeks to play games because we play our turn when we get the chance, which is like what, once every 4-5 hours, esp on the weekend? Still awesome, though--I hope that damn Hasbro doesn't pull the plug on it, like they've been threatening to! Those greedy bastards...
Here's one for the ladies: What's in your handbag right now?

How do you feel about your birthday? Do you look forward to it and remind all your friends, or do you dread it and try to keep it a secret?
As the years pass, I'm not too crazy about the numbers going up, but it's always an excuse to get together with friends and family and party down! And get gifts. Gotta love the gifts. I never bother lying about my age--I think it's the most pathetic thing to get caught doing. If anyone's curious, my bday's on June 10th and I'll be turning 37! I'm already thinking about doing something big for my 40th. I don't know what, but it's gotta be a pretty good bash.
One of the gifts that my sis got me for Xmas was a takoyaki "kit!" Very exciting--a complete array of items to make my very own favorite Japanese street food treat. I'd been holding off making them because I hadn't gotten around to getting any octopus, but last nite when I got some items from the Korean deli, their marinated octopus wasn't very good so I got the brilliant idea to rinse off the marinade, take out the bamboo shoots and seaweed bits and just use the octopus. It didn't turn out half bad!

but w/the sauce, mayo, and bonito flakes, it's all good! My sis forgot
the green flaky stuff, but oh well, it was still pretty good. I'll have to make some more of these at the next anime party!
I was supposed to go out with some friends to Belmont Shore in Long
Beach, but I wasn't feeling well, so I skipped out and fell asleep at
10:30! Needless to say, the first New Year's eve in a long time where I
didn't ring in the new year with some champagne, but man, I was tired.
So the whole long weekend was pretty uneventful: I rearranged my
studio, saw a couple of movies (I Am Legend, Enchanted), played a lot
of Puzzle Quest on the DS and finished knitting my first baby beanie!
Oh man, it was pretty slow going, since I've never done cables (or a
beanie) before, but it came out pretty nice. Now I just gotta make 3
more... Hope everyone had a great new year's!

Here it is, being modeled by a little character I like to call Muu!
It's become an annual tradition, this making (and selling) of the holiday cards. It started out humbly in 1999, when I decided to make my own Christmas cards, scanning in a painting and doing some photoshop stuff to it, and printing them out painstakingly on my little Canon 4200 inkjet printer. I hand-made these puppies until about 2003, I think, when I finally decided to start getting them professionally printed, and sell the overstock to make back my printing costs. That's worked out pretty well, but I hated dealing with inventory and fulfillment (shipping the orders). So this year I decided to make the cards available on my Cafepress store, which means it's totally hands-off for me. I just upload my art--the printing, ordering and shipping is all done by Cafepress.
Wow, can't believe this weekend's the Beverly Hills art show already! I've been busily preparing the past few weeks, and I think I'm ready! It's my first time at this show and I hope it goes well. It's a really big and well-known show so there should be good traffic, anyway :) If any of you are in the area, come by the Beverly Gardens Park on Santa Monica (between Rodeo and Rexford). You can get more info at my art site: http://steph-han.com/news.htm
What else...I've just been crazy busy at work lately, but I'm finally taking Monday off, yay! Catch up on all my tv shows, play some katamari, lounge around with the cat... The new "date night" I've instituted with the hubby's been working out well--last Friday we went up to Pasadena to catch a friend's art show at the Armory then saw Lars and the Real Girl after dinner at Tani--a less-than impressive Korean-owned japanese restaurant on Colorado Blvd.
Oh, I did buy some items of note lately that I'm excited about, and hope they get to me soon! An awesome interchangeable knitting needle set that is like buttah (got to test drive them at the knitting group last week), and a pair of plastic "clog"-like shoes that I spotted on a fellow knitter. Below are photos:
